The Case of Courtney's Crew

When Courtney Chang started referring friends to the Diagnostic & Ambulatory Program at BC Women's Hospital, no one knew the impact it would have! Courtney referred Jennifer Dowhaniuk, Stephanie Evans, and Melanie Foisy for unit clerk roles within the department after making her own career change. "I told them about the UC program and how happy I was working for PHSA," says Courtney, "and shortly after they looked into it as career changes themselves."

She knew that they would be a great fit for the team, too. “I will only put my name behind someone I know and trust. These three girls are all amazingly bright with great work ethic, I knew Anna would be happy (and very very lucky) to have them on her team. I couldn’t let any of them get snatched up by some other department! It also doesn’t hurt to see friends at work every day!”

Administrative Manager Anna Bloomfield has nothing but good things to say about Courtney’s referrals: “Wonderful referrals—I am very pleased with her bringing such a wealth of talent to our very demanding program. Our department was faced with severely reduced staffing levels this summer due to both planned vacations and unforeseen long term absences. They really pulled together and often had to double-up their duties in order to ensure that we continued to deliver care to our Maternity patients and their families. Through all of it, they showed up with their positive attitude, flexibility and problem solving skills, as well as their best patient centered philosophy and never once complained. They are an asset to the Diagnostic & Ambulatory Programs at BC Women's.”

The new team members are enjoying their time in the department, too! “I love the work environment in our department,” says Jennifer. “I am very happy I was referred. I love what I do and the people I work with, we are like family.” Adds Melanie, “I’m so glad I was referred and I’ve been really enjoying my time here so far. I feel like a valuable member of the team here.”

And Stephanie has already become a Talent Detective herself—she successfully referred her sister Sydney Bruinink for a job with PHSA and says that she and her sister “look forward to our future careers with PHSA!"
